Job Description

As our People & Culture Business Partner (HRBP), you touch all aspects of the employee lifecycle and support the alignment of People (HR) programs with business objectives. You act as a champion and steward of PLOS’ culture and partner with stakeholders across the organization to solve complex organizational challenges. You report to the Head of People and Culture. This role is based out of San Francisco with occasional travel to our Cambridge, UK office.


  • You create, own and drive the diversity, equity and inclusion program at PLOS
  • You lead performance management at PLOS. This includes counseling managers regarding individual performance management cases. You will act as a key partner in the quarterly review process and compensation review process
  • You serve as a key advisor to individual contributors, managers, and leaders by providing insight and data that guides effective decision making and execution of people-related solutions
  • You design and maintain programs that promote organizational development, employee engagement and retention. This includes supporting our training and development programs, our rewards and recognition program, and our employee engagement survey cycle (administering survey and facilitating action planning and follow up)
  • You own PLOS’ exit process. You cleanly manage exits and transitions and strengthen our organization through employee feedback and assessment of attrition trends, including quarterly reporting of attrition data and providing thorough exit interview write ups to Executive Leadership
  • You routinely assess policies to drive constant enhancements and efficiencies to our People & Culture initiatives 
  • You partner with HR Operations to ensure PLOS remains in compliance with state and federal labor laws and practices
  • You will provide recommendations for pay and promotion decisions, policy/guidance interpretations, job classifications, internal/external equity and compliance issues. You will evaluate and recommend improvement to existing compensation policies, guidelines and procedures; consistent with compensation best practices, trends and organizational objectives and work with HR Operations salary to complete benchmarking reports as needed
  • You will stay up to date on industry and market trends and make people-related strategy and program recommendations that ensure PLOS is a great place to work

Qualifications & Experience

  • 5 years of progressively responsible HR experience
  • Demonstrated ability to work within constraints as well as challenge the status quo
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or related area. HR certification is preferred but not required
  • A passion for talent management, a strong generalist foundation and great analytical and critical thinking abilities
  • Exceptional coaching, influencing, facilitation, and communication skills are required
  • A strong desire to achieve excellence and the ability to hold self and others accountable for high quality, timely and effective results
  • A high degree of professionalism, discretion and sound judgment. High degree of personal ethics and integrity required
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills, including being able to build trust effectively across all levels of the organization
  • Strong working knowledge of State and federal employment laws and practices
  • Familiarity with a remote working culture and ability to effectively cultivate culture, values, and organizational improvements across disperse demographics and locations of employees
  • Out of the box, creative thinker with a desire to continuously find ways to help organizational culture and create a flourishing employee experience for all
  • Excellent follow through, judgment, and common sense. "Make it happen" attitude

  • Experienced with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook). Intermediate Excel skills are absolutely essential. Presentation skills required
  • Proactive ability to anticipate the needs of hiring managers and the People & Culture team is essential. Flexibility, multitasking and prioritizing skills are required
  • Ability to maintain composure under stress-inducing or complex situations
  • Courage to speak up and make suggestions is highly desirable
