Blog Post: PUC Commissioner Chong at the Stride Center
posted Monday, April 27, 2009 5:06 PM
In February, the Stride Center was pleased and honored to host California State PUC Commissioner Rachelle Chong and key staff advisor Pam Nataloni at the San Pablo location. Why the PUC Commissioner, you ask? The Stride Center is best known for its focus on workforce development, ushering adult participants into professional careers in the information technology field. Lesser known is that for years we have worked to ensure the power of the internet and personal computing is made available to underserved individuals. We have always understood that deployment of broadband to underserved communities is essential. We also understand that broadband is like a highway in that if one doesn't have a car, know how to drive, or know how to get from one place to another, the highway does little good. In the case of broadband, the car is a personal computer, the map is the internet and learning how to drive (using a computer) takes training.
Commissioner Chong understands this equation better than anyone. Her office works hard to see to it that broadband is delivered to every community in the state but they are not willing to stop there. Through their programs and collaborations with organizations like the California Community Technology Fund, Commissioner Chong is working to ensure that underserved communities with broadband access are also receiving services that ensure broadband adoption. These services include basic user training, low cost computers, low cost technology support and jobs for low income individuals in the technology field. Commissioner Chong and Ms. Nataloni are strong and active supporters of the Stride Center. In fact, this month they are helping ReliaTech receive more donated computers to refurbish and return to the community. Both have pledged to donate their own personal computers and are sponsoring an e-waste collection April 17th for PUC workers and others in the state office building in San Francisco. This partnership actively demonstrates the power of collaboration and collective will. Community Comments
